La Salle Academy: Civic Spirit from Classroom to Cafeteria

La Salle Academy is an all-boys rigorous Catholic college-preparatory high school based in lower Manhattan. La Salle educates students of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds with a particular focus on underserved populations.

87% of La Salle students receive tuition assistance and students commute from all five boroughs and the outer New York Metropolitan area. 100% of graduating students are accepted to college.

Civic Spirit is taught as part of President/Principal Dr. Cathy Guerriero’s senior elective, “Honors American and New York Politics”. Participating students, known as “Civic Scholars”, engage in political debate and discussion within the classroom. Outside of the classroom, they work with their school community to offer civic solutions to concrete challenges. Recently, Civic Scholars put together an anti-bullying campaign for their classmates.

At the 2019 school’s spring gala on May 9th, La Salle Academy is honoring Civic Spirit as its “Educator of the Year”. Civic Spirit Co-Founders Rabbi Robert Hirt and Virginia Bayer will accept the award on behalf of the consortium.
